BICYCLE is an independent product and engineering practice building technology for the physical economy.

Building, powering, and caring for the systems that sustain everyday life takes specialist knowledge and difficult decisions. We work with the people who know these problems firsthand to turn their expertise into useful tools.

We partner with founders and small teams to define what's worth building and bring it to life, from product direction through design, engineering, and launch.

On Helsinki’s waterfront, Katajanokan Laituri shows how ambitious timber construction can be. Buildings like it, in Finland and across the United States, point toward a future where lower carbon construction becomes everyday practice.

Getting there means making carbon part of ordinary building decisions: comparing options, finding suitable products, and specifying them with confidence.

Helping a leading carbon tool connect project teams and manufacturers

A leading building decarbonization platform already served 200+ architecture and engineering firms, including leading US offices like Perkins&Will and HKS, when it set out to extend its product with workflows connecting those teams to building product manufacturers.

BICYCLE helped shape and deliver that expansion, bringing product information, demand analytics, and communication into the platform. Our work ran from product framing through full-stack engineering and release, in collaboration with their team.

Turning a diligence engine into a customer-facing product

A clean energy diligence platform had built an expert engine for evaluating clean energy projects. It needed a product that let customers work with the documents, analysis, and findings behind those evaluations.

BICYCLE helped define and build the first customer application, shaping the workflows and interface and integrating them with existing infrastructure in close collaboration with its technical team.

Today, that work supports diligence on more than $5 billion in clean energy assets.

Before capital can move, developers and investors need a clear view of risk. Diligence that stays locked in expert workflows cannot keep pace with the projects the grid still needs.

Our approach

Good software starts with understanding how the work happens. We work closely with domain experts and the people using the product to understand their constraints, test assumptions, and build around real workflows.

  • A product needs to take shape

    You have expertise, data, or technology, but need to work out what people will use. We help define and test the product before you commit to a larger build.

  • An important new initiative needs an owner

    You see an opportunity, but your core team is committed elsewhere. We help define and deliver the new product or capability without requiring the whole team to change focus.

  • An existing product needs a way forward

    You need to decide what to keep, improve, or rebuild. We assess the product and technical foundations, then help sequence and deliver the next steps.

Engagements can run from early product definition through design, engineering, and launch, with advisory or fractional support where useful.

A commitment to environmental justice

BICYCLE supports academic institutions, nonprofits, and social enterprises through technical advisory and product work, including select pro bono and reduced-fee engagements.
